PMC

Daraus:

Dioscin (C45H72O16, DIO) is a naturally occurring steroidal saponin widely distributed in medicinal plants of the Dioscoreaceae, Liliaceae, and Fabaceae families.

The glycosidic bonds in DIO are easily hydrolyzed under acidic conditions or in the presence of glycosidases, and the resulting metabolites such as diosgenin have important biological activities.
