One of the most studied herbal remedies is Pelargonium sidoides extract (EPs 7630). In five randomized studies in children with acute respiratory infections (rhinitis, tonsillopharyngitis, acute bronchitis), a significant reduction in symptom severity, including nasal congestion and cough, as well as a reduction in tonsillitis severity scores, was observed [5]. In acute bronchitis, after 7 days of therapy, a more significant reduction in the severity of bronchitis was observed in the extract group compared to placebo, indicating a rapid onset of clinical effect. The mechanisms of action include antiviral and antibacterial activity, as well as the modulation of tumor necrosis factor-α and nitric oxide production, confirming the anti-inflammatory potential of the plant [49,50]. In all studies, the drug demonstrated a favorable safety profile and good tolerability [5].
